Buttermilk Icing

2 cups brown sugar
1 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup butter
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts 

Nuts are optional.  Combine brown sugar with buttermilk, butter and 1 teasp. Each soda and vanilla in saucepan. Cook over low heat until it forms a soft ball or registers 235 F. On candy thermometer. Beat until it is of spreading consistancy. Add nuts.
