Chocolate Chip Cake 

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
3 cups cake flour
1 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup shortening
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs 

In small bowl, mix brown sugar, walnuts and 1/2 cup chocolate chips, set aside. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour 13x9 pan. In large bowl, measure flour and remaining ingredients, except chocolate chips. With mixer at low speed, beat until mixed, constantly scraping bowl.increase speed to high, beat 2 minutes.  Stir in reserved chocolate pieces. Pour into pan. Spread topping over batter. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on rack.
